As many of you know, the arts are something that are very dear to me. We are at a crossroads as the Vancouver and Burnaby School Districts are threatening to cut elementary band programs. It appears that some of the programs are in fact safe for another year. Music can be enjoyed by all ages at a variety of levels. I believe music plays a role in all of our lives in one way or another. Every day you are exposed to music on the radio, musical soundtracks in movies, jingles in advertisement, customized cell ring-tones, etc.
Despite cuts around the Lower Mainland, the North Shore continues to have stellar music programs in many of the local schools in addition to thriving community groups such as the West Vancouver Youth Band and originations such as the North Shore Community Music Society (NSCMS). One of groups under the NSCMS is the Jazz Connexion which I play lead Alto Saxophone in.
