For the City of North Vancouver, this is where the heart of the city is. It is the most densely populated area of the city and features the most diverse housing options. Apart from being the main commercial centre of this city, it is also home to one of the most prestigious hospitals within the Vancouver Coastal Health system, the Lions Gate Hospital.
Lonsdale Avenue, the main thoroughfare of North Vancouver, was name for Arthur Heywood-Lonsdale (1835-1897), who was a rower and landowner and the High Sheriff of two counties. He was also a substantial investor in North Vancouver. The avenue runs up from the docks at Lonsdale Quay well into the Upper Lonsdale neighbourhood where it curves and joins Montroyal Boulevard.
In 1912, a street car service ran up and down Lonsdale Avenue and as far as Lynn Valley. The system was decommissioned in 1947 giving way to the automobile and other forms of transit.
Growth for North Vancouver was gentle and slow but fortunes revived during the Second World War when production at the Wallace Shipyards by Lonsdale Quay built 164 cargo vessels, among them many Liberty Ships, and employed nearly 20,000 men and women from 1942 to 1945.
Hundreds of wartime houses were built to house these workers. Many of these homes have been replaced, but the housing boom continues in North Vancouver today.
