The enclave of Dundarave is a well established neighbourhood of West Vancouver. It was once a sleepy residential outpost to Vancouver and was established in the early 1900s long before the Lions Gate Bridge was built.
People wishing to get to their summer cottages in Dundarave rowed across from Vancouver. In fact, the word ‘’Dundarave’’ itself comes from a Gaelic word which references a ‘two-oared boat.’ People could land at the Dundarave Pier which was built in 1915.
The centre of activities takes place in the Village, a one block section of Marine Drive and a block or two up and down the slope of West Vancouver. In Dundarave Village, residents in the neighbourhood can shop for organic foods, wines, baked goods, and designer coffees. There is also a well attended English-style pub called the Red Lion but which is licensed as a restaurant, so the kids can come along.
The village of Dundarave clings fiercely to its identity and refuses to be swallowed up in the vast area of West Vancouver. As such, it hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, from concert performances in John Lawson Park on the water, to Lighting of the Lights leading up to Christmas where bands and dancers entertain the festival goers.
